Easy tips + tricks to prepare your home for Summer
May 9, 2022
It is that time of year again which means it's time to get your home ready for the warmer months coming up!
Cold weather can be brutal on any house, so starting now will take a load of work off of you when the time comes for hanging by the pool, the lake, or the beach. These tips and tricks will also increase the longevity of your home and make it a more enjoyable living space.
Here are some quick tips from us here at Adams Homes:
It's easy to spruce up this high-traffic space of your home in just a few steps. Cleaning your home's walkway can go a long way, and pressure washing is your friend when it comes to doing this. Replace damaged bricks or pavers….or flip them over, anything helps. Straighten and make bricks and pavers even so that it is more appealing to the eye. Fix cracks in the concrete and get rid of any grass/weeds that are sneaking through them.
Don't forget about the entry-wayNow that the walkway is clean, the entryway is the next space your guests will see. For the entryway, start with decluttering. Remove any items that do not belong such as shoes, jackets, bags, etc. Grab a magic eraser and get to work! Wiping down the walls and trim of this area will brighten it up and make it pop. Don't forget about the actual door! Wiping down the front door will help the visual appeal of your space. The cooler weather can also cause stripping around the hinges of the door, so it doesn't hurt to take a screwdriver and tighten up anything that has come loose.
Fresh flower beds are always a good ideaNothing freshens up a space like fresh flowers and greenery. Clear out the weeds that are taking over your landscaping and add new mulch! Well-groomed shrubs and blooming flowers are sure to liven up your home.
Clean out your gutters! This is often one of the last things people want to do on a checklist but it is very important. The cooler weather causes leaves and debris to fall into your gutters and clog them up, which leads to a mess of a pile-up when it rains. These pile-ups can also lead to leaks in the walls and roof of your home because water will drain where it is not meant to. Next time it rains look for breaks or leaks in your downspouts and gutters to prevent water damage.
Touch up deck & patioPatios need a good cleaning now and then. Use a cleaning brush or pressure washer + deck cleaning soap to remove any dirt or buildup. Decks can harvest mold and mildew, so be sure to get rid of all grime using these products.
The grillNo one wants a burger cooked on a nasty surface. Cleaning your grill is important to do before your first cookout. The easiest way to get the "gunk" off the inside cook box is to first heat the grill for 10 minutes or so… this makes everything scrape off a bit smoother. Now, disconnect the line to the gas and let the grill cool before removing the grates and burners to wash them. You can wash them in warm, soapy water. Wipe down the exterior as well to give it a glow, then put it back together!
Clean your cushionsOutdoor fabrics are pretty durable, but they get dirty throughout the year. Most cushions are machine washable so pop them off your favorite chairs and throw them in the wash BUT be sure to let them air dry so they don't shrink! If the fabric isn't removable, grab a scrubbing brush or toothbrush and get to cleaning with warm water + dish soap!
