Doing Our Part: Proud Supporters of Feeding the Gulf Coast
November 4, 2024
We had another rewarding opportunity to spend time at the Feeding the Gulf Coast distribution center and lend a hand for those in need. Right now, 1 in 5 American children do not have enough food and don't know where their next meal will come from. The numbers are staggering, 47 million people, with 14 million of those being children, experience food insecurity annually. Feeding the Gulf Coast and their volunteer partners are vital in providing a sense of stability to those who are in a tough spot.
Feeding the Gulf Coast traces its roots back to 1981 when it was founded as the Bay Area Food Bank in Mobile, Alabama. Over the years, the organization has expanded its reach and evolved to meet the growing needs of the community it serves. Today, it operates as a crucial member of the Feeding America network, the nation's largest domestic hunger relief organization. With a commitment to alleviating hunger through the distribution of nutritious food, Feeding the Gulf Coast has become the cornerstone in the fight against food insecurity across South Alabama, South Mississippi, and the Florida Panhandle.
Between our morning and afternoon shifts we were able to come together and make a huge impact for the families that are relying on us. Our first team sorted 3,800 pounds of food that will provide 3,167 meals. Our afternoon team packed 1,189 backpacks that will provide 8,323 meals for children to take home. That brings our grand total to 11,490 meals provided in ONE day!
Here we have our awesome volunteers hard at work! This is what 63 combined hours for an amazing cause looks like. Special thanks to Feeding the Gulf Coast for this opportunity.
